WATERVILLE — Friends of Quarry Road will host the official opening of the Susan Childs Boat Launch at 10:30 a.m. on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 3.

After a ribbon cutting ceremony, the group’s president, Joe Reisert, will give an update on the area and plans for trail enhancements and summer programs.

The new boat launch was built in remembrance of Childs, a local family physician and dedicated Friends of Quarry Road board member. The launch provides access for non-motorized boating on Messalonskee Stream. Kayakers and canoers are encouraged to bring their boats for a paddle.

The trails, including mountain bike single-track that was added last year, will be open for biking and walking for all ages and abilities, and a barbecue will start at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. Donations to support the trails will be gratefully accepted.
