Portland police arrested a man Friday in connection with a shooting Tuesday on Preble Street.

William R. Ficklin, 32, a transient originally from Massachusetts, was charged with attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person in the shooting of Russell Solak, 39, according to a statement by the Portland Police Department.

Ficklin shot Solak during a fight on Preble Street near the Public Market parking garage, police allege. Solak remains hospitalized at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was in stable condition Friday.

Detectives located Ficklin and a female companion staying at the Marriott Residence Inn on Fore Street. Ficklin was arrested as he left his hotel room around 9:45 a.m. Friday.

Police said anonymous tips were instrumental in identifying and locating Ficklin in connection with the shooting.
