PALERMO — Four people were taken to the hospital after a crash just before 8 p.m. Monday on Route 3 in front of Palermo Elementary School.

Jannine Nelson, 80, of Palermo, pulled out of the school’s parking lot into traffic as James Freeman, 68, of Verona, was driving on Route 3, according to Waldo County Chief Deputy Jason Trundy.

Verona, who was in a 1995 Toyota truck, crashed into Nelson’s 2014 Ford Escape as she pulled out, Trundy said.

Both were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with minor injuries, along with the passengers in each vehicle.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash with the Maine State Police, who are working on reconstruction of the accident.

Trundy said he didn’t know the extent of the vehicles’ damage, but both were towed away.
