The June 15 column by Tom Waddell, “Maine Senate wrong to deny secular invocation,” struck a chord for me in that his request for our elected representatives to be adults and do their jobs was rebuffed before it could even be delivered to its target audience.

Are the Senate members incapable of debate, interaction, and civil discourse? Do they rely solely on praying to, and seeking guidance from, some ethereal deity? I personally find his invocation to be complimentary to our elected officials and encouraging them in their task of governing and finding common ground.

I would be interested in reading a follow-up article where the selected lawmakers let us know what was so terrible with the invocation that they deemed it unacceptable for opening the session. If this invocation as written was too troubling for their ears, it is likely they are in the wrong place and should seek alternate employment.
