WATERVILLE — Motorists traveling on upper Main Street near the Pine Tree Mall from Sunday night through early Monday morning can expect to encounter a change in the traffic pattern, as a company installs a water main for the property that will require the road’s northbound lane to be closed.

Gerald Mackenzie General Contractors Inc., of Waterville, will be doing the work in the heavily trafficked business area, scheduled to start around 8 p.m. Sunday and to continue until no later than 6 a.m. Monday, according to Mackenzie.

He and City Engineer Greg Brown said both northbound lanes going toward Fairfield will be closed completely and the southbound lane will be used for both northbound and southbound traffic during the work.

“There will be one lane in each direction, separated by cones,” Mackenzie said.

Traffic signals will be turned off, lights will be installed in the area and flaggers will be posted on the road to help motorists maneuver through the work area, according to Brown.

The city’s Public Works Department issued a road opening permit for the work, he said.

The area to be affected is a short strip of Main Street from about Bangor Savings Bank to the traffic light at Elm Plaza, according to Mackenzie.

Businesses in the Pine Tree Mall include the Ming Lee restaurant and Advance Auto Parts. The Cigaret Shopper on nearby Armory Road also is part of the development, which is owned by Sanderson Development. The Little Caesars pizza shop is also in the affected area.

The water main installation is related to work being done at Pine Tree Mall at 369 Main St., where an addition is to be built for a new Harbor Freight store.

Brown said he expects the traffic volume to be low during the night in that area, and Mackenzie concurred.

“We just ask that people follow the signs and flaggers’ instructions, and everything should go smoothly,” he said.
