Crashes on Interstate 295 in Scarborough, Portland and Falmouth tied up traffic Friday during the heavy travel hours of 4 to 6 p.m.

The separate incidents, and the high volume of vacation and rush-hour traffic, began to cause delays around 4 p.m., according to the Maine Turnpike Authority. Motorists were advised during that time to consider taking Interstate 95 to avoid long waits in stop-and-go traffic.

The Scarborough accident happened first, delaying northbound traffic, and was cleared first.

The two-car Falmouth accident, which took place near Exit 10, happened next, and slowed northbound traffic to a crawl stretching all the way back to Portland. That accident was cleared around 6 p.m.

The Portland accident happened on the southbound side around Exit 6 shortly after 5 p.m., but was cleared quickly.
