A large, smoky fire at the Aggregate Recycling Corp. at 434 Dow Highway in Eliot was expected to burn throughout Sunday night and into Monday, according to Fire Chief Jay Muzeroll.

Muzeroll said more than a dozen fire departments responded Sunday night to the fire at ARC – the same commercial recycling plant that was damaged by a large fire in May 2016.

The facility sorts and recycles paper and construction trash, but Muzeroll said he is not certain what might have started the fire.

“We’ll probably never know what started the fire,” the chief said.

The fire was reported at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and was under control by 9:30 p.m. Muzeroll said crews will spend the night and probably most of the day on Monday making sure the fire doesn’t flare up again.

“Hopefully, the smoky conditions we are seeing now will clear by morning,” Muzeroll said.

Dow Highway is also known as Route 236 and serves as a commuter road to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

No injuries were reported.
