BOWDOIN — Police say a Lewiston woman was killed when she ran a stop sign Wednesday afternoon and her car was struck by an SUV in Bowdoin.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry identified the victim as Amanda Gauvin, 37, who was driving a 2003 Ford Focus north on West Road in Bowdoin and failed to stop at Store Road around 1:12 p.m. Her car was hit on the driver’s side by a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Geraldine Scanlon, 29, of Sabattus.

Gauvin died at the scene. Scanlon was not injured.

West and Store roads were shut down for a short time after the crash.

Merry said in the release, “It is unknown why the one vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign … deputies will conduct a thorough investigation.”

Merry said the accident is being investigated by Deputy Matthew Shiers, Lt. Brian Quinn and members of the Brunswick Police Department accident reconstruction team.
