FARMINGTON — The first specialized residential dementia facility in Franklin County opened Tuesday on Knowlton Corner Road.

Woodlands Memory Care of Farmington, part of Woodlands Senior Living, is a 20,000-square-foot structure. The assisted-care residence provides personal care, services and programming for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. With the capacity to care for 36 residents, the building is the organization’s 12th senior living community and its seventh “memory care” location in Maine.

Farmington Town Manager Richard Davis said in a news release that the facility joins a health care system with a long history.

“It’s exciting to have this level of professional memory care in our community,” Davis said.

Gov. Paul LePage, in the same release, said the services the facility provides are needed in Maine and in rural communities such as Farmington.

“We are the oldest state in America, so it’s very important we pay attention to our seniors,” LePage said. “Woodlands’ care and commitment to Maine people is profound.”

The staff will give guided tours of the residence at 175 Knowlton Corner Road from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1. Features include multiple common areas, expansive outdoor gardens and walking paths, and fully furnished private and shared bedrooms with private bathrooms. An expanded second phase including assisted living and private residence apartments is anticipated for the fall of 2018.

Laurie Trenholm, executive director of the Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, commended the organization and said her group looks forward to providing support for the facility and the families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

“I’m pleased to say the Alzheimer’s Association has partnered with Woodlands Senior Living across the state to provide what we believe is the best in training. Here in Maine, we currently have an estimated 27,000 living with Alzheimer’s. Nationally, we know that over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is expected to grow,” she said.

Woodlands Senior Living is a Maine-based, family-owned business providing services for the elderly in Maine.
