WATERVILLE — City councilors on Tuesday will consider awarding a $12,250 contract to a Newport company for a new automated gate system for the main entrance to the city’s public works and parks and recreation complex on Wentworth Court.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the council chamber on the third floor of The Center at 93 Main St. downtown and will be preceded by a 6:45 p.m. executive session at to discuss labor negotiations.

The city’s gate system at the Wentworth Court complex is about 30 years old and in poor condition, according to the resolution councilors will consider Tuesday. Installation of a new system, to be bought from Newport Fence Co., of Newport and installed this fall, will provide better security and dependability for controlled access to the city’s complex, it says.

Funding for the gate system would come from the capital reserve-public works facility upgrade account.

In other matters, the council will consider buying a $4,580 radar speed sign with money to come from the Police Department’s drug forfeiture account. The sign would replace a malfunctioning one bought in 2014 for about $1,500. The new one will be able to collect more data than the current one, according to city officials.

Councilors also will hear a presentation on a public works road improvement plan and consider approving a memorandum of understanding between the city and Friends of Quarry Road that replaces a former version. The council will consider taking a first vote to rezone 2 Cottage St. from commercial to residential to allow the owner to meet the building setback requirements for construction of a residential garage. Councilors also will consider rejecting a bid for the riverwalk project, as it was the only bid submitted and far exceeds the money available. They also will consider canvassing the votes and determining results of the Nov. 7 municipal election.
