Two people were sent to Maine Medical Center after a crash on Congress Street on Tuesday afternoon.
Portland police said a man driving a blue SUV suffered a medical condition, lost consciousness, sideswiped a car and then hit a utility pole before veering off the road into a 7-Eleven parking lot.
The driver and his passenger were both taken to the hospital, Portland police Sgt. Charles Libby said. Their names and conditions were not immediately available, but Libby said they were both conscious and able to talk when an ambulance took them to the hospital.
Libby said he didn’t know what caused the driver to pass out.
The utility pole was snapped off at its base, but Libby said there weren’t any lines connected to it.
Hailey Hunter of Caribou, a law student at the University of Maine, said she was in her car at about 1:45 p.m., headed east on Congress Street near the intersection with Dow Street, when the SUV sideswiped her Honda. Her car was scratched from the rear passenger door to the front bumper on the passenger side and a side-view mirror was torn off, but Hunter said she was uninjured and was the only occupant of her car.
Police said the crash is under investigation.
