On Veterans Day, the student body at Messalonskee high school and middle school, under the dedicated guidance of Lauralee Fegel and her “band of sisters,” paid tribute to Word War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans with a wonderful presentation at the performing arts center in Oakland. We veterans were escorted to our seats by students and were treated to readings by the students, visual presentations and a wonderful band tribute to each branch by playing our individual marching songs.

Having worked at Goodwill Hinckley for 21 years, I am a big fan of teachers and the vital role they play in our country’s future through their dedication to our youth. What these students experience through their exposure to living history by engaging with war veterans enhances their understanding of the value of service to their country and some of the truths of war from those who have survived it.

Thank you all very much for a wonderful program.
