An elderly Gorham woman died and her 75-year-old husband remained in serious condition Monday night at a Portland hospital, five days after their car was struck head-on by a sport utility vehicle.

Gorham police confirmed Monday that Marion M. Green, 78, of Hodgdon Road died just hours after the crash Wednesday on County Road, near its intersection with Deering Road.

Police said 21-year-old Kyle Phelan of Limington, drove across the centerline and hit the Greens’ black Ford Taurus head-on around 11 a.m. The couple was extricated from the wreckage by Gorham firefighters.

Richard Green, who was driving the Taurus, was listed in serious condition Monday night at Maine Medical Center.

Phelan was not hurt in the crash, but his passenger, 18-year-old Sidney Brown of Limington, was transported to Maine Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Sgt. Sears Edwards said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Phelan has not been charged.

“It was determined that (Phelan’s SUV) was traveling eastbound on County Road and crossed the centerline into the westbound travel lane, striking (the Greens’ car) head-on,” Gorham police said in a statement shortly after the crash.

According to Marion Green’s obituary, she graduated from Gorham High School in 1957 and later worked for the University of Southern Maine for over 20 years in its Affirmative Action Department. The Greens were married for more than 52 years.
