SCARBOROUGH — Piper Shores has completed a $14 million expansion, adding a 43,000-square-foot memory care and assisted-living facility to its 138-acre campus between Higgins Beach and Prouts Neck.
The private nonprofit retirement community announced the opening of its Holbrook Memory Care and Assisted Living Residences on Wednesday.
The new building includes 14 memory care units and 16 assisted-living units. It also features common areas for exercise, arts and crafts, cooking and indoor gardening with certified recreational therapists on staff to manage daily activities.
“Dementia is a mounting concern nationally, and Maine lacks adequate care options to accommodate the growing need,” said Piper Shores CEO Jim Adamowicz. “Maine is also the oldest state in the U.S., and with 10,000 baby boomers retiring every day in America, it is clear that the state and the nation must prepare for the needs of the older members of our community.”
Located off Spurwink Road, Piper Shores was established in 2001 as Maine’s first nonprofit, continuing-care retirement community, committed to accommodating residents’ needs as they age, Adamowicz said.
Today, it has a two- to seven-year waiting list for independent-living cottages and apartments.
