I usually enjoy the column by J.P. Devine, but if he was trying to be funny in a recent column (“Colbyville becomes center of the Earth,” Nov. 19) he missed the mark. I found it annoying.

The Waterville area is most fortunate to have Colby College in town. The students volunteer thousands of hours in our area schools, at the Alfond Youth Center, the homeless shelter, food kitchens, and more. We as residents also attend free of charge music programs, art programs, lectures and classes at Colby.

Aren’t we blessed to have educational opportunities for the mind as we age and not just mindless shops to wander through and spend money as the city to the south can claim. Please appreciate both Colby and Thomas colleges and the contributions they add to the Waterville area.
