MANCHESTER — A 64-year-old Winthrop woman died Wednesday afternoon when her pickup truck veered off the road and crashed into the Kennebec Valley YMCA building in Manchester.

Holly A. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene, according to information from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they thought Wright might have experienced a medical problem, leading to the one-vehicle accident, reported at 1:16 p.m.

Wright was driving a 2002 Chevrolet southbound on Granite Hill Road when it left the roadway and hit the building. The accident damaged one wall and some of the building’s siding.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Ranae L’Italien, chief executive officer of the Kennebec Valley YMCA, for which the Manchester facility is a satellite operation.

L’Italien said because the building is operating at decreased hours due to the coronavirus pandemic, there were no members and only a small number of employees at the facility when the accident occurred.

The building was closed Thursday so YMCA officials could assess the damage, which was expected to reopen Friday for regular hours — 8 a.m. to noon.

L’Italien said the building sustained minimal damage, none of which impacted its structural integrity. She said she was working with the YMCA’s insurance company to estimate the cost to repair the damage.

Along with local police and deputies, the Winthrop Ambulance Service and Manchester and Hallowell Fire departments responded to the accident.
