Determining how to scale back

School superintendents knew their districts would have to absorb more than $27 million in cuts this academic year. Now, each one knows his or her district's share of that spending curtailment.

The state Department of Education broke the news to superintendents today about the size of the cuts from Gov. John Baldacci's spending curtailment order their districts will have to absorb.

Administrators say they have begun planning how to reduce their budgets and will make firmer plans after the Thanksgiving holiday.

In 2001 the State of Maine approved over $25 million dollars in tax breaks and other government beenies tothe world’s richest company WALMART to build a private building in Lewiston,Maine. At the time i believe i was the only individual in the entire state of Maine to think that was a disgrace. Even posters on the conservative forum ‘As Maine Goes’ posted nothing but positive posts about giving tax breaks to Walmart.

I bet the State of Maine could use that $25 million in taxes to save some of these education cuts and job laid offs now about to happen in Maine.

No one ever claimed Mainers to be too smart.

Just curious if the cuts are going to come from above where the loss won't be felt or will we lose teachers, do schools really need a full time nurse? Do High Schools really need a Clinical Counselor? No, they don't. Education is very important, when the cuts come through let us see how important the BIG WIGS who run the show feel...
