AUGUSTA Latin language lovers and Greek grammarians will gather Friday at Cony High School for the year's first meeting of the Junior Classical League.
High school students from across Maine who are studying Latin and Greek will compete in a variety of tests that gauge reflexes and knowledge of Latin grammar, vocabulary, mythology, culture and history. Some 250 to 300 toga-clad students will begin gathering at 3:45 p.m., with closing ceremonies scheduled for about 9:30 p.m. Eric Kelmenson of Hampden Academy, vice president of the JCL, said in a news release that the JCL "allows intellectual kids to meet one another and for further study of fascinating cultures that give us a better understanding of today's society." Dan Dube of Augusta is president of JCL this year. The fall convention is largely an academic competition, said Kathy Prins, sponsor of the fall state convention and Latin and French teacher at Cony. The JCL's Olympic games take place in the spring.
