PITTSFIELD — The Town Council on Tuesday night passed an emergency ordinance to stop accepting pallets at the transfer station.

On Wednesday, in another special meeting, the Town Council authorized Town Manager Kathryn L. Ruth to sign paperwork accepting a $131,000 grant for work at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport. The grant from the Federal Aviation Administration and the state Department of Transportation will allow the town to procure land easements necessary for the project.

Tuesday night's meeting came in response to a request from transfer station manager Donald C. Chute. The wood pile is at capacity, Chute reported, because companies are inundating the transfer station with wooden pallets.

The emergency ordinance takes effect immediately, and will last for 61 days. In the meantime, the council will study other possible solutions, such as user fees for wooden pallets.

Last week, the council authorized extra money for chipping of the wood pile. The town had spent its allocated chipping money for the year in less than six months.
