MONMOUTH — One person was hospitalized and another faces felony charges after a report of an assault on Route 126 Saturday.

Andrew George-Lewis Ward, 23, of Litchfield, was arrested and charged with elevated aggravated assault.

Ward was freed Sunday from the Kennebec County jail in Augusta on $1,000 bail.

Monmouth Police Officer Robert Wells released few details of the incident, which remains under investigation, but he confirmed one man was taken by private vehicle to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what Wells described as non life-threatening injuries.

Wells said the aggravated assault charge is elevated because it involved a weapon. He declined to specify the type of weapon.

The alleged assault occurred at the South Monmouth Market around 5:15 p.m. Saturday. The incident involved just Ward and person taken to the hospital, Well said.

Wells hope to release additional details of the incident this week.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said. “I’m hoping to talk to the other party soon.”

Suspect sought

in Augusta shooting

AUGUSTA — Police continue to investigate who is responsible for shooting a man in the leg on Sunday.

Augusta Police Lt. Keith Brann said Monday that detectives are trying piece together events that led to the shooting.

“We have a lot of follow-up interviews to do, which hopefully will point us in the direction of a suspect,” Brann said.

One man suffered a bullet wound in the leg early Sunday after shots were fired outside the Bridge Street Tavern.

Augusta Police Sgt. Christopher Shaw identified the victim as an Augusta man in his 50s. Shaw said the victim was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston following the incident.

Brann said the victim had been released from the hospital by Monday afternoon.

Shaw said police were called after an altercation began inside the tavern and people spilled out into the street where others had gathered. Multiple shots apparently were fired into the air, he said, with one striking the victim in the thigh.

Shaw said police are working to determine the caliber of weapon involved, and he anticipated that more information would be available today

Brann said there is no reason to fear additional incidents.

“This was an isolated incident,” he said. “There is no issue with the public being in danger.”

Crash victim was

wearing helmet

LITCHFIELD — A local man was airlifted to a Lewiston hospital Sunday after crashing his motorcycle on Route 197.

Thomas Fallon, 49, was taken by a Lifeflight of Maine helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center with what were believed to be serious but non life-threatening injuries, said Maine State Police Trooper Jason Madore.

“He was wearing a helmet,” Madore said. “That definitely saved his life.”

A CMMC spokeswoman said she could neither confirm nor deny that Fallon was a patient at the hospital.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. Sunday as Fallon was driving his 2004 cruising-style Yamaha motorcycle east on Route 197. Fallon lost control of his motorcycle as he rounded a curve near the intersections of John Tarr and Dead River roads, Madore said. The motorcycle overturned, tossing Fallon to the ground.

“Speed was a factor,” Madore said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been a factor in the crash.
