AUGUSTA — Maine utilities said high winds have knocked out power to more than 24,000 electric customers in the state.

Central Maine Power says 11,273 customers are without service, down slightly from the total earlier today.

But Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. says 12,944 customers are affected. The total is far above what was reported earlier in the day, when 20-40 mph winds were reported with gusts nearing 60 mph.

The National Weather Service says the strongest winds were expected to decrease this afternoon and evening. Rainfall totals were 1-2 inches in southern and central Maine and New Hampshire, causing a rapid increase in river levels with some pooling and minor flooding in road. Minor flooding will continue through today as the rivers crest and then fall and the storm moves off to the east.
