A 16-year-old boy from Canaan was severely injured Sunday after he crashed his all-terrain vehicle on Murray Road in Newport.
The teen was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with head trauma. He is currently in a drug-induced coma, according to the Maine Warden Service.
The crash happened at approximately 2 p.m.
The warden service said excessive speed and driver inexperience contributed to the crash. The teen was not wearing a helmet. He was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and crashed through the woods, with the ATV landing on its side, the warden service said.
A driver in a second ATV, reportedly a relative, did attempt to warn him to slow down prior to entering the curve in the road, the warden service said.
