WILTON — A woman’s scream brought an attempted break-in to an abrupt end early Wednesday morning in Wilton.

The 50-year-old woman was watching television about 12:30 a.m. when she heard scratching at a locked door just before it was opened, which sent her running toward the stairs and screaming to wake her sleeping husband, who is 48, according to Lucille Porter, the administrative assistant for the Wilton police.

The couple called 911, Wilton police Officer Brandi Alton responded, and a state police dog unit was called to track the suspect, who fled after the woman screamed, Porter said, citing the officer’s incident report for details about the break-in.

The police dog lost the suspect’s scent when it reached U.S. Route 2, which is near the home, she said. The suspect remains at large.

The couple told police that they planned to get a new door because they had concerns the lock could be forced open too easily, Porter said. She declined to release the couple’s name but said the break-in happened at 26 Allen St.

Porter asked people to call the Police Department at 645-3876 with any information about the incident.
