This morning, homeowner Carl Hannon, front, and neighbor Pat Welch throw limbs onto a pile under a poplar tree in Benton that was struck by lightning and broke in half during a violent storm Wednesday evening.

The tree snapped power, cable and telephone lines and caused serious damage when it hit a pickup truck in background. Hannon said there were no injuries and he was waiting to have power restored.

Thousands of Mainers lost power during Wednesday night’s storm. More than 16,000 lost power, including about 5,000 in Kennebec County, according to Central Maine Power.
