SINCLAIR — Maine State Police say a man died after his SUV went off a road, hit a boat launch and sank in a lake.

Police recovered the body of 27-year-old Gilberto Rentas of Madawaska on Friday. They said he was driving on Route 162 in Sinclair when he went through the parking lot of the Long Lake Sporting Club. The SUV struck a boat launch, a dock and a boat and ended up in the lake.

Police told the Bangor Daily News that Rentas died despite the efforts of volunteers who tried to rescue him.

Sporting club owner Ken Martin ran to a small fishing boat. He opened the back gate of the SUV while it was still floating, but couldn’t see anyone. He said it filled with water quickly.
