As a person who has been attending the West Athens Independence Day celebration for many years, I extend my hearty appreciation to the people of West Athens and the In Spite Of Life Players for hosting this wonderful event for all these years.

Along with them, I lament those attendees who show no common decency and regard for others. The tire burners, those who toss their trash and bottles everywhere, those who swear loudly when children are everywhere to hear, those who do not care about the effects their behavior has on others. I am ashamed of them, and I expect their parents would be, too.

If there is a parade next year, my son will be staying home, even though he loves the parade and play.

Next year, fireworks will be legal in Maine. With some of the behaviors we witnessed this year perpetrated by ignorant folk, I can’t quite feel safe for my son next year with explosives legally in the hands of idiots.

Once again, thank you West Athens and In Spite Of Life Players. I’m on your side.
