The Department of Defense on Tuesday announced the death of 19-year-old Pfc. Tyler Springmann, of Hartland, who was serving with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.

Springmann was killed when his unit was attacked in Kandahar province by enemies with improvised explosive devices, according to the department. Springmann, a 2010 graduate of Nokomis High School in Newport, was assigned to an infantry division in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Another member of his unit, 33-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth Elwell of Holland, Penn., was also killed in the attack.

Correction: The Department of Defense initially provided the incorrect spelling of Springmann’s last name.
