AUGUSTA — Viles Arboretum, 153 Hospital St., recently held its annual meeting, detailing grants, projects and upcoming events to more than 60 attendees.

The slate of officers for 2011 was announced. They are Dean Corner, president; Dave Auclair, vice president; Bernie Slofer, secretary; Mark DesMeules, executive director; Jerry Nault, treasurer; and staff members Steve Oliveri, Richard Dufrense Sr. and Andrea Paquin. Board members are Hillary Schultz, Linda Williams, Mike Smith, Cliff West, and Mary Oatway.

Volunteers recognized were Dufrense and his wife, Deborah, and Paquin and her husband, Russel, who were each presented with a gift. Jacob Mcglashing of Augusta was recognized as the youngest and most energetic volunteer, and was presented with a gift certificate.

The arboretum has recently received five grants totaling more than $50,000 and collectively aimed at improving public outreach, educational programming, membership services, interpretive signage focused on visitor appreciation and exploration of the arboretum preserve, collections and trails, according to a news release. The arboretum’s first full color newsletter was unveiled and an adventure and learning preserve trail map will be completed later this year.

There was a dinner of barbecued chicken, baked potatoes and coleslaw, and ice cream was served.
