Porch partially damaged by fire

AUGUSTA — A city apartment building was damaged Sunday when a fire broke out on an upper-level porch.

Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Daniel Guimond said someone walked into the fire station around 1:30 p.m., to report the fire to a porch attached to the building at 373 Water St.

The fire in one corner of the top-level porch was partly extinguished by residents, Guimond said.

Firefighters quickly doused remaining hot spots and made sure the fire did not spread.

The fire caused minor damage to a support post and floor of the porch, Guimond said.

A report of the incident did not indicate how the fire started, but Guimond said it was unintentional.

Motorcyclist escapes serious injury

HALLOWELL — A Farmingdale man was taken to the hospital Monday after crashing his motorcycle at the intersection of Middle Street and Litchfield Road.

Dennis Royer, 66, was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with what Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred just before 10 a.m., as Royer was driving his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle south on Middle Street. Royer was bearing right onto Litchfield Road when his motorcycle hit gravel in the road and slid out from underneath him, Nason said.

The gravel was kicked up from the side of the road by vehicles making the turn too sharply, Nason said.

Royer was wearing a helmet.

“The helmet apparently did make contact with the pavement, which could have saved him extensive injury,” Nason said.

Royer’s motorcycle sustained minor damage.

Neither speed nor substances was a factor in the crash and no charges are expected, Nason said.
