PORTLAND —  Joel Hayden, the suspect in a fatal double-shooting in New Gloucester, made his first court appearance in the case this afternoon in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Hayden is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Renee Sandora and Trevor Mills. Sandora was his girlfriend and the mother of their four children. Police described Mills as Hayden’s longtime friend.

Hayden was not expected to enter a plea in the proceeding. He entered the courtroom in yellow jail clothes and appeared to be wearing a hospital gown with a brace underneath. He walked very slowly and appeared to have great difficulty in sitting down and standing up. Police said Hayden suffered serious back injuries after crashing his car after the police chase.

Hayden said only “Yes,” “No,” and “No, Ma’am” in response to questions from Justice Nancy MIlls. She ordered him to be held without bail.

Hayden is accused of shooting the two victims in front of Sandora’s home in New Gloucester on Monday evening.
