AUGUSTA — Firefighters extinguished a fire which heavily damaged a family’s home at 53 Middle St., this morning.

A neighbor reported the fire and smoke pouring from the large two-story, single-family building around 10 a.m. Firefighters from several neighboring communities, including Chelsea, Winthrop and Hallowell were called to assist.

Firefighters had the fire out within a half-hour, though crews remain on the scene at this hour looking for hotspots.

There was no one home at the time of the fire.

Homeowner Rory Strout said he lives there with his wife and two children, ages 3 and seven months.

Firefighters said there was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. The home sustained substantial smoke and water damage but firefighters said it appeared to be salvageable.
