I support same-day voter registration, so I urge everyone to vote yes on Question 1 — that is, yes to the first referendum on the ballot this Election Day (Nov. 8).

I have long since supported provisions such as Maine’s long-standing tradition of same-day voter registration because it encourages participation in the democratic process.

For our government to be truly “of the people, by the people, and for the people” (to invoke words of the great Republican President Abe Lincoln), we need to allow as many people as we can to participate in elections.

More than 18,000 Mainers made use of the law that allowed same-day voter registration in the last presidential election, and many people use it every year, even just for the convenience of updating their address information if they’ve moved. Let’s maintain the tradition of inclusiveness in Maine’s elections by voting yes on 1.
