MADISON — A fire late Monday afternoon was contained to one room of a home on John Street.
Jennifer Sandoval said she, her two sons, ages 5 and 1, and her 2-year-old daughter were in the kitchen for dinner at 4:51 p.m. when the 5-year-old said he smelled smoke.
Sandoval said she investigated and saw flames when she opened her mother’s bedroom door.
Sandoval’s mother, Cathy Webber, owns the blue one-story home at 28 John St., a few blocks from the Madison Fire Department on Weston Avenue.
Sandoval said she shut the door and told the children to run out of the house.
When the four were outside, Sandoval said, she saw a red van pulling into a neighbor’s driveway.
“I hollered to them, ‘My mom’s house is on fire.'”
Fire crews, which arrived within minutes, extinguished the blaze in about one hour.
As of early Monday evening, a cause had not been determined. Police at the scene said the fire may have involved a TV set on a dresser in Webber’s bedroom.
Police told Sandoval she could return to the home Monday evening.
