WILTON — Police believe a car’s brakes may have failed just before a crash Wednesday afternoon in Wilton that sent two people to the hospital.
The car, driven by Justin Meyer, 18, of Vienna, rolled past a stop sign on McCrillis Corner Road before hitting another car heading south on Route 133 toward Jay, said Officer Matt Billian.
After the collision, Meyer’s four-door Pontiac sedan rolled over once into the ditch, landing on its roof. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Billian said.
A 46-year-old woman who was a passenger in the front seat of the other car, driven by Fred Conlodue, 45, of Farmington, was taken to the same hospital, Billian said, declining to identify the woman. He described her injuries as not being life-threatening.
Billian is still investigating to find out why Meyer’s car ran the stop sign before the crash about 3:20 p.m. He said a cause had not been determined but brake failure is a possibility.
Another passenger in the back seat of Conlodue’s two-door Ford Focus was not hurt, he said. Everyone was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and both cars were judged to be total losses.
The posted speed limit on Route 133 is 45 mph. No tickets have been issued, according to Billian.
