Why are voters being asked to overturn the new election law now in place? The new law requires residents of Maine to register at least two business days before election day. This time frame was put in place to eliminate voting by non-residents, as well as voters claiming more than one residence in Maine, by giving town and election officials sufficient time prior to election day to verify individual’s resident status.

As a Maine citizen, I see our new (current) voter registration law as essential to maintaining integrity and honesty in our election process and results.

Forty-one other states have instituted registration laws that are similar to or even more stringent than our current law. How could this be a hardship to any law-abiding citizen?

In fact, if a person registers within 30 days prior to the election, he or she may vote absentee at that time, eliminating the necessity of making a trip to the polls on election day.
