The 12th annual Veterans Day Road March in Augugsta will be held Friday, Nov. 11, beginning at 6 a.m. The march is in remembrance of veterans who upon returning from war, struggle to reintegrate back into society.

According to the Veterans Administration, there are an estimated 131,000 homeless Veterans in the United States. Participants in this year’s event will be seeking donations to improve this situation. All money raised during the march will be donated to the Homeless Veterans Shelter in Augusta.

The 21-mile march will begin at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Capitol Park. Marchers, including soldiers, Marines, veterans and thier supporters, will travel North on State Street, cross the Calumet Bridge and travel north on U.S. Route 201 to Winslow. The march will proceed on Benton Avenue to Winslow Memorial Park on Roderick Road. Soldiers are expected to arrive at the memorial at noon. Each mile will be marked with a photo and citation of many honorable veterans, describing their heroic actions.

All veterans and supporters are invited to march. Participants are encouraged to march any portion of the route, ride along or attend the memorial service at noon.

There will be a free barbeque and memorial service beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on Roderick Road in Winslow.
