RUMFORD — An administrative officer with the Rumford Police Department has died after being shot during a confrontation with a Maine warden.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office said 46-year-old Eric Richard was shot shortly after 10 a.m. today in a wooded area of Rumford.

In a statement, Attorney General William Schneider said the Maine Warden Service and two state police troopers with a tracking dog were searching for Richard when an armed confrontation took place between Richard and Warden Jeremy Judd. Schneider said the state troopers were not involved in the shooting.

Schneider said Richard died from the gunshot wound, but the manner of death has not yet been determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
