WATERVILLE — A 37-year-old Waterville man was charged with aggravated assault after his 3-month-old daughter was hospitalized Sunday morning with multiple head injuries.

When Robert Phillips, 37, took his child to the Inland Hospital emergency room Sunday at 8:15 a.m., she had two skull fractures, soft tissue bleeding and brain trauma, according to Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey of the Waterville police.

The girl was listed in stable condition late Monday afternoon at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she was taken by ambulance Sunday, Rumsey said.

Medical professionals at Inland Hospital contacted Child Protective Services with the Department of Health and Human Services who, in turn, called Waterville police.

Detective Christopher Paradis interviewed Phillips, who lives at 69 Water St., Apt. 1, and arrested him around noon Monday.

Phillips was charged with one count of aggravated assault, a Class B crime punishable up to 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 fine. Rumsey said his bail was set at $20,000 cash and that Phillips remained at Kennebec County jail as of early Monday evening.

He is scheduled to appear Jan. 31 in Kennebec County Superior Court.
