ORONO — Justin Edwards scored 22 points and Gerald McLemore 18 as Maine came back from a big first-half deficit to defeat Holy Cross 72-60 on Sunday.

The Black Bears (2-1) trailed 29-17 with 5:19 remaining until halftime. A layup by Sletoslav Chetinov began their comeback, and McLemore had a pair of 3-pointers, a layup and two free throws as Maine finished the half with a 14-2 run to tie it 31-31.

A three-point play by Kilian Cato and a jumper by McLemore to start the second half gave the Black Bears a 36-31 lead. The Crusaders (2-4) were still within five points, 61-56, with 7:50 left before Maine put the game away with an 11-2 run that included dunks by Edwards and Alasdair Fraser.

Dave Dudzinski scored 20 points to lead Holy Cross, which had won all six previous meetings with Maine, but committed 17 turnovers to eight for the Black Bears.

Men’s hockey

Salve Regina 3, Colby 2: Scott Harff appeared to have the goal which would send the Mules into overtime, but Chad Goodwin scored with just 1:14 remaining to lift the Seahawks to the win on the second day of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-off Classic at Bowdoin College.


Ray Zeek also scored for the Mules (1-3-0). Matt Delaney made 20 saves.

David Watkins and William Gomolinski scored for the Seahawks (3-4-0). Mike McDonald stopped 29 shots.

Women’s hockey

UMass-Boston 1, Colby 1: Goalies Brianne Wheeler of Colby and Leah Hallett of UMB combined to make 79 saves as the teams battled to a non-conference tie in Waterville.

Wheeler finished with 31 saves for Colby (1-2-1) while Hallett made 48 saves for UMB (3-4-2).

Maddy Borek scored her first collegiate goal for the Mules. Alyssa Sullivan tallied for UMB.

Also Sunday: Winthrop High graduate Sam Leclerc scored 19 points to lead Bentley past Saint Anselm 65-64 in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s basketball game.
