FARMINGTON — A 39-year-old Westbrook man will spend 10 years in jail for sexually molesting a young girl.

The man, Steven R. Goozey, 39, of 93 Chestnut St., was sentenced Monday in Franklin County Superior Court to 20 years in jail, with all but 10 years suspended, on ten felony charges of unlawful sexual contact, according to court filings.

Goozey pleaded guilty to charges that he molested the girl multiple times from 2006 to 2010, when she was under 12 years old, court documents state. The Franklin County District Attorney’s Office gave his brief service as a police officer as a reason to ask for a maximum sentence of 10 years, as agreed upon in a plea deal.

He was hired by the Carrabassett Valley Police Department in 2010, about one month after the sexual abuse had stopped, prosecutors wrote in a sentencing request to the court.

“(Goozey’s) employment decision was a betrayal of the public trust,” prosecutors wrote.

Goozey worked for the town’s police force for three months and was fired for reasons not related to any criminal charges, Chief Scott Nichols said, declining to give details because it is a personnel matter.

Upon his release from jail, Goozey is also required to serve six years of probation in which conditions mandate he complete counseling, not contact the victim and her family and have no unsupervised contact with children under the age of 18. He faces up to 10 years in jail, associated with the suspended portion of the sentence, if he violates the conditions of the probation, court documents state.

He must also register with the Maine State Sex Offender Registry for the rest of his life, court documents state.
