Those of us who claim to value democracy and the democratic process should speak out in support of the Occupy movement. We are privileged, in these difficult times, to be witness to citizens who are acting in the spirit of American democracy at its best, and giving birth to a social movement that is truly “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
As in the past, established power is seeking to crush the movement. So far they have not succeeded. The tenacity, the creativity, the courage and endurance of those seeking to heighten awareness about the shameful inequities in our society is inspiring and give hope to many who have felt powerless for a long time.
It is encouraging to see increasing support for this creative and patriotic social movement. At its core, it is about saving our country, and I can’t think of anything more patriotic than that.
