ESTERO, Fla. — Spencer Abbott won the Shawn Walsh Memorial Most Valuable Player Award as the University of Maine men’s hockey team won its fifth Florida College Classic on Friday night with a 5-2 win over UMass.

Abbott had a goal and four assists in the tournament.

Maine (7-4-2) tooka 1-0 lead  when Joey Diamond scored his 11th goal of the season with an assists from Spencer Abbott and Mike Cornell. Brian Flynn added a power-play goal to make it 2-0 before UMass got on the board on a T.J. Syner goal at 7:36 of the second period.

Mark Anthoine made it 3-1 2:01 later on the power play, but UMass answered in the third period when Connor Allen scored to make it 3-2.

Matt Mangene pushed Maine’s lead back to two with a power-play goal and Flynn made it 5-2 with his second goal of the game.

Men’s basketball

Curry 66, Colby 65: Sedale Jones hit a pair of foul shots with eight seconds left and the Mules missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Colonels a win in the Salem State Invitational in Salem, Mass.

Ben Foreman scored 24 points for Colby (3-7) and was named to the all-tournament team. Shane Rogers and Eric Beaulieu each added nine for the Mules.

Jones scored 24 points and Lambros Papalambros added 14 for Curry (3-6).

Women’s hockey

Saint Michael’s 3, Colby 1: The Purple Knights scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back on their way to a win in the Saint Michael’s Tournament in South Burlington, Vt.

Madelena Santore scored twice for Saint Michael’s (1-9-1) while Macey Thomas had the other goal. Erin Stevens made 35 saves.

Jackie Tavella scored off assists from Samantha Slotnick and Marissa Simmons for Colby (3-5-1). Brianne Wheeler made 13 saves.
