WATERVILLE — Police are urging people to be cautious when accepting cash during transactions that originate on Craigslist and similar online sites.

The warning comes after an area woman apparently unknowingly accepted eight counterfeit $20 bills from a person who bought a pellet stove she had advertised on Craigslist.

Waterville police Sgt. Alan Main said the woman who was scammed did not complete a bill of sale and did not know the buyer; he said there were no suspects.

The counterfeit bills were discovered Thursday at The Five County Credit Union on Waterville Commons Drive, Main said.

The woman, Main said, sought to deposit the money in her savings account.

The credit union reported that serial numbers of four of the bills were identical, he said.
