The LA Times editorial “Kodak’s digital dilemma” reprinted in the Jan. 19 newspaper makes a good point about the ongoing creative destruction of a competitive economy.

It is said that the incessant destruction of the “old” by an even better “new” brought about by gadget making startups is one of the things that makes us a truly great country.

While the example used is that of digital technology, the concept applies equally well to the power industry. Here too, those with newer greener ideas work to transition us into the future, while the established extraction companies struggle mightily to hold on to the status quo in a changing environment. Pun intended, of course.
