AUGUSTA — The average price of home heating oil in Maine has jumped a nickel in the past week to an average of $3.77 per gallon.

The director of the state Office of Energy Independence and Security said Monday the price is being driven up by world events, including a potential ban on Iranian crude oil and austerity measures passed by the Greek government.

Crude oil has soared to about $100 per barrel.

The office found home heating oil selling for as high as $4.07 per gallon and as low as $3.48.

Average prices tended to be lower in the southwest and western areas of the state and highest in the north.
