WATERVILLE — A screening of the documentary “Windfall” by Laura Israel is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Colby College in the Diamond Building’s Ostrove Auditorium.

The full-length feature is an account of rural upstate New York town Meredith and what happened when wind turbines were built there. The film depicts the perils of a booming industry and the rancor it sowed among the locals, according to promotional material.

Screenings are also set for public libraries in Skowhegan, Rangeley, Carrabassett Valley, New Portland, Unity College and at the University of Maine at Farmington

It recently made its official large screen debut in New York City and will be showing in theaters all over the country in the coming months.

It’s a movie that could have been made just as easily about several towns in Maine, promoters say.

The event sponsor, Friends of Maine’s Mountains, is working to develop additional screenings elsewhere in the state. For details visit www.windfallthemovie.com. All screenings have free admission with the exception of The Strand Theater in Rockland and the Nickelodeon in Portland.

In his review of the film, critic Roger Ebert said “Windfall” left him disheartened.

“I thought wind energy was something I could believe in,” he wrote. “This film suggests it’s just another corporate flim-flam game.”
