AUGUSTA — Chelsey Whittemore’s layup with 2.9 seconds left to play lifted Skowhegan to a 56-55 win against Mt. Blue in the opening round of the Eastern Maine Class A girls basketball tournament Friday.

Whittemore scored after senior Amanda Johnson penetrated into the lane and passed to her. The No. 6 Indians trailed by 17 points (29-12) at halftime but battled back to catch the No.3 Cougars in the fourth quarter. Johnson scored a game-high 27 points, including five in overtime, to lead the victory. Gabby Foye led the Cougars with 17 points, including five 3-pointers.

Skowhegan (12-7) will face hampden or Edward Little in the semifinal round whiel Mt. Blue finishes at 12-7.
