WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — The University of Maine women’s basketball team earned its first America East Conference tournament victory since 2006, beating Stony Brook 49-43 in the opening round Thursday evening.

Maine improves to 5-12 overall, 9-22 in the conference and will play No. 1 Boston University in the quarterfinals at 12:05 p.m. today. No. 9 Stony Brook ends the season 4-26 overall, 1-16 in the conference.

Samantha Baranowski scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Black Bears, while Danielle Walczak added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Brittany Williams chipped in nine points and eight boards, while Rebecca Knight had eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

Maine rallied to take the lead late in the game on a pair of free throws by Williams and a putback by Baranowski. Walczak and Baranowski then made 4 of 6 foul shots down the stretch to ice the win.
