AUGUSTA — A Somerville woman on Thursday admitted bringing Klonopin pills with her to jail and stealing items from a pharmacy in Waterville and a dress from an Augusta store.

Bonnie French, 39, pleaded guilty to seven separate charges in Kennebec County Superior Court just before jury selection was scheduled to begin for her trial.

The charges were trafficking in prison contraband on April 21 at the jail in Augusta; and two counts of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, failing to provide correct name, failing to report, unlawful possession of oxycodone and violating condition of release, all in July in Augusta and Waterville.

French was sentenced to four years in jail, with all but six months suspended, and two years of probation.

She was also fined $400.

French’s attorney, Kevin Sullivan, said his client also had previously pleaded guilty to a theft charge in Bangor and was awaiting sentencing there.

He also said she was hoping to get into an inpatient treatment program for substance abuse.

Assistant District Attorney Paul Rucha said corrections officers found the pills on French when they fell from her clothes during a strip search at the jail.

He said French had assured the officers several times she was not carrying contraband.

French told the judge she tried to return the items before leaving the pharmacy, but did not notice one in her purse.

“I meant to give it back, but I got scared,” she said.

In the Augusta incident, Rucha said French put the dress in her purse, but left it at the store and fled after the store owner and two employees confronted her.

Rucha said officers found her in a nearby apartment.

“If I hadn’t been using pills, I would never have done any of that stuff,” French said.
