ORONO — Brice O’Connor scored the game-winning goal with 3 minutes, 43 seconds gone in the second period and the University of Maine held on for a 2-1 win over Merrimack in the Hockey East quarterfinals Sunday night.

Maine’s Spencer Abbott opened the scoring with a goal at 11:38 of the first period. Adam Shemansky and Will O’Neill assisted on the goal. O’Connor then scored his goal assisted by Nick Pryor and Abbott.

Ryan Flanigan got Merrimack within a goal when he scored at 9:16 of the second period. Jesse Todd and Jordan Heywood assisted on the goal.

Dan Sullivan made 20 saves for the Black Bears while Joe Cannata stopped 30 shots for Merrimack.

Maine advances to the semifinals, which begin Friday.
